Pilates and Pregnancy

Pilates and pregnancy do indeed go hand in hand. Because of it's gentle yet powerful nature, prenatal Pilates can help to keep you fit and relaxed through your pregnancy. It can aid digestion, help you sleep better and it strengthens and tones the abdominal area, the pelvic floor and back area, preparing your muscles for childbirth and after. Since Pilates is considered a very gentle and low impact form of exercise, it is one of the best forms for pregnant women and does a great job keeping your core and stabilizer muscles fit and strong. Pilates and pregnancy exercises target the tummy and pelvic floor muscles and these are the muscles that often weaken during pregnancy. Additionally, many of the Pilates exercises are performed in a "hands and knees" position which is an ideal position for all pregnant women. Another plus for Pilates: Pilates is well known for helping new mums get their pre-baby figures back after the baby is born as well! If you want to attend a Pilates class during pregnancy, look for a class specifically designed for pregnant women. Exercising during pregnancy can be beneficial to both you and your baby but talk with your doctor before starting any physical exercise programs to make sure you are capable first. If you can't get to a local Pilates for Pregnancy class, or you prefer to exercise at home (or to make up your own small Pilates group with other expectant mums?), I recommend the selection of DVD's below:
